We are looking forward to welcoming you to London for the BSSCD Winter Conference!

The theme for this year's conference is 'Supporting and caring for patients with a learning disability'.

BSSCD President, Dr Andy Kwasnicki has gathered together speakers experienced in the provision of dental care for this diverse group of patients.

There will be panel discussions where delegates will be able to ask questions. If you would prefer to submit a question before the conference please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Aims

  • Consider the barriers and health inequalities patients with learning disabilities face in 2024

  • Discuss the role of learning disability liaison nurses and how they can support the patient journey

  • Review different options for sedation within dentistry, consider how services evolve to meet the needs of patients and how services overcome barriers to delivering care

  • Consider different options for induction of anaesthesia, their strengths and weaknesses and how reasonable adjustments support care

  • Refresh knowledge regarding aspects of the Mental Capacity act and when to consider seeking advice from the court of protection.

The panel discussions

Sedation: An interactive session discussing cases of patients with learning disabilities being sedated using midazolam, propofol or remimazolam as alternative forms of sedation. Discussion of the drivers for services to evolve and potential barriers to change. Speakers will compare their services and alternative options they have used. The speakers will be happy to accept questions and comments to share their experiences.

Induction of GA: An interactive discussion regarding alternative methods of induction including ketamine, premedication and clinical holding. Also how other reasonable adjustments help to deliver a positive outcome to providing care. Speakers will compare their services and the reasons why for complex patients their services have evolved, and how often as a SCD service we need a range of options to deliver patient centred care.  The speakers will be happy to accept questions and comments to share their experiences not only of when it went to plan, but also when things work out but not in the way they expected.
