Title: Learning from hindsight: delayed management of mandibular fractures in a patient with a learning disability
Author: Hayat S, Pullan S, Patel S, Yeo X H
Abstract:
Patients with learning disabilities face barriers in accessing the care that they need, affecting quality of life and long-term prognosis. We present a case of a 38-year-old male seen in the community dental service, who sustained an unwitnessed fall and bilateral mandibular fractures which were only diagnosed, and therefore treated, three weeks later. Despite an uneventful recovery, there are many learning points to share on reflection, to help increase awareness and improve diagnostic vigilance, considering the limitations presented by this vulnerable patient group.
